This carefully selected collection of critical essays deals with Cuban Art in the Período Especial, the period of economic crisis that began in 1987 and continues to this day. The intention of this publication is to provide what the editors feel are the most pertinent insights into a complex and mostly unappreciated creative world that many outside of Cuba — most particularly U.S. citizens — have unfortunately been deprived of as a result of American censorship and trade embargoes. While citizens of European countries, especially Spain, have been able to see numerous exhibitions of new Cuban art, this has unfortunately not been the case in the United States. Work has been done, is being done, and will continue to be done by Cuban artists, and that work will always continue to be documented by someone. What has been less certain is whether Americans and others living outside of Cuba would regularly be able to see or learn much about it. This book fills a significant gap in our understanding of recent Cuban critical writing, perhaps the strongest body of critical work to be produced in Latin America in this period. Published in Spanish in partnership with Spanish publisher Torrevieja.
